The Giants beat the Saints quite thoroughly as expected, limiting them to 9 first downs and 174 total yards. QB Ron Freeeman was on fire once again, torching the Saints for 361 yds and 1 TD. In the other game, San Diego QB Troy Taylor (31 TDs/4866 yds/348 yds rushing!) was a one man army against the Dolphins (207 yds passing 1 TD / 71 yards rushing 1 TD). He will need to run a lot more or find new targets in this one as WR Guy Sanders is doubtful for this one.
A full season has passed since the Chargers upset the NY Giants to win the last Gelat bowl and guess what? We get a rematch! The Giants seem to have improved their passing game (ranked 3rd) and their pass defense (also ranked 3rd) since these teams last faced each other. The Chargers like to pass too (ranked 5th), and that plays right into the strength of the Giants. The Chargers have a good pass defense too (ranked 4th), but have been better at stopping the run (ranked 2nd) this season, something that won't help them against the pass-happy G-men (have the 28th ranked rush attack).
The defending champs figured out the G-men last season, but I think coach Boysen made enough changes in his schemes this season to improve his odds. In fact, coach Corbett was held to a total of 6 points against the Giants in his interim role as coach of the Cardinals while the G-men scored a total of 50+ points against the Cardinals. If that is any indicator, then the G-men will crush the Chargers (then again, it may not be because something tells me coach Corbett pretty much didn't scout the Giants much for those games like he would this one). My stats also seem to like the G-men better and a quick look at the season stats will make this obvious to everyone. In the end, I think the G-men are just the hungrier team too.

| Thanks to Dave as well as He Hate Me, whomever he is, for another fun season. I have not looked at the logs or film yet, but I did change my defense quite a bit for this game as Steve did a great job in the last Super Bowl setting his offense to work against some of my basic schemes. This Super Bowl must have been a great game. And, actually the last Super Bowl was very close as well... going down to the wire with a loss by the Giants going for a 2 point conversion... if I recall correctly.

So, like Dave said these are very close games and game plans and luck are critical. It was interesting last year to see the impact that Steve's PPP adjustments had on the outcome. I think it was a 10 point swing or so. Someone said that Steve was the best at game plan adjustments, and I would agree. That is why I had to completely re-vamp my defense for this game and go with something new. If I didn't he would find a way to beat it like he did last season.

I suppose the Giants were a little lucky this year that the Chargers top receiver was injured in the prior game. Something that small could have made the difference in a game as close as this. Fortunately, all the Giants were healthy going into the game.

So thanks to everyone for a great season. I hope everyone had fun. I think the changes Dave has suggested for the new season will take off some of the off-season pressure (salary cap stuff) and the elimination of the expanded roster has made things a little easier as well.

I like the talented offensive linemen that are showing up in the draft as they will improve the running game. The Giants have not picked up many of them as yet. But, we have been studying the Seahawks and other teams with a strong rushing attack and are going to try and improve in that area next year. And, if after looking at the film we like the looks of the new defense we developed for the Super Bowl we may try that some in the regular season as well. We are looking forward to the new season and want to thank everyone who participated this last year.

NYG |

That was indeed another great, close game. I'm glad I was still competitive even after you made your adjustments, Rob. I did make a lot of adjustments for this game too -- mainly tried to run more. That seemed to be the key to keeping me in this game. Unfortunately, rainy games increase the risk of turnovers for teams that try to run. The rain definitely had an impact as QB Troy Taylor fumbled the ball 3 times -- too bad we didn't recover the most important one -- the one at the Giant's goal line in the 3rd quarter!! Oh well. Perhaps it really was that I just didn't get HeHateMe's kiss of death to help me like last season.
It has been a great run as the Chargers coach for the last three seasons. Three AFC championship games in a row and two Gelat Bowls -- quite an accomplishment for me. I've lost two XFL championships (Schreiner and I lost one to Hatam when we co-coached the Cowboys awhile ago) and won one, so I'll need to even that out somehow. That said, I think there is no disputing that Rob is by far one of the greatest XFL coaches ever now -- especially in the recent history of the league. He's made it to four Gelat bowls in a row! Gotta give props to that kind of greatness. The only question now is will anyone in the NFC ever unseat the Giants or does it really require me to move to the Cardinals to achieve that? |
